Welcome to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR)! |
---|
Our objective is to turn red links into blue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that, according to Humaniki, only 20.13% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed? Content gender gap is a form of systemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. We invite you to participate, whenever you like, in whatever way suits you and your schedule. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome at Women in Red! |

This month, Women in Red is focusing on its tenth anniversary and on Kenya. We chose Kenya because it will be the location of this year's Wikimania. It's not our first editathon regarding Kenya. We did one some years back when Women in Red held a 24 hour editathon. Part of the editathon was hosted in Nairobi by Carol Mwaura and she is one of the co-authors of a paper that will be presented at m:WikiWomen* SummitWikiWomenSummit, a Wikimania Day 0 pre-conference.
By all means, donate an improved article or two but the challenge is "Ten for Kenya": a new article for every year of Women in Red.
Below is a collection of a number of redlists that include lots of Kenyan women to write about. Feel free to have a look at these if you want to know where to get started. We hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in creating biographies and other articles about these notable women. By doing so, we think you will find some interesting insights into life in Kenya and its rich history. An updated/improved article is a very welcome contribution ... one or two might manage "Ten for Kenya!"
The main goals of the event are:
- to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of prominent women
to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
- to promote the new and improved articles and images through social media
What else?
- Below, you'll see a section where you can list the articles you created this month and another section where you can add the images you have uploaded to Commons.
- This essay on creating women's biographies and our Ten Simple Rules might be helpful to newer editors.
- If you share any of the articles or images on social media, please indicate you have done so next to the article name.
Redlists (lists of redlinked articles to be created)
[edit]A wide variety of redlink lists can be found on our Redlist index, but the obvious one is the list of Kenyan women in red and there are lots. Remember that this country had a long history before it became a British colony and there were missionaries from many countries.
There are a wide variety of dictionaries and other reference works available, some that editors might consider are: |
Other missing Kenyan women:
- Alesandra Ogeta: Transgender rights activist and Director of Programs for Jinsiangu, a Kenyan organization supporting intersex, transgender, and gender non-conforming people.
- Arya Jeipea Karijo: Women's rights and transgender rights activist ([1])

You will need a US copyright rationale.
